Sea ships from centuries back needed this staff to help smooth any problems that took place during travels away. It was not that planes began to employ afterward stewardesses that made up what we call flight attendants and stewards.

The role of the flight attendant is attributed to Heinrich Kubis of Germany in 1912. It was not until the 1920s that United States airlines began to employ cabin boys. They would serve and attend to the needs of passengers. Before the female flight attendant was used, it would be a decade later. Ellen Church, a registered nurse, took this place in history when United Airways hired her to be the first woman attendant. She began the trend of airlines because they were thought to be better for tending to passengers suffering from illness or injury, hiring only nurses. The list of responsibilities that air hosts or hostesses perform now includes customer service, safety and relaxation, food service, and assistance with baggage. Some males perform those roles as well, although flight attendants today are females.

Qualifications and training for flight attendants vary by country or region but encompass lots of the same features worldwide. Training length ranges from weeks to months and usually occurs near major airports for obvious reasons. Safety is a priority topic during training and can consist of an assortment of courses that are extensive. Flight emergencies, evacuation procedures, firefighting, survival in different environments, first aid, and CPR training are only some of the several subjects for which they are trained. Various academies exist for training, or employees may be trained via an airline. A certificate of completion is given out to new attendants who have gone through training. Knowledge of more than one language is a good feature for airlines, especially for a steward or stewardess.

Uniforms have changed for crew members throughout history. Since the beginning of a mostly or all female team beginning in the 1930s, uniforms have undergone several transformations. First, the focus was on nurse's uniforms to promote flights attendants' image on flights as safety and health specialists. Then, strict military lines promoting stewards' heritage and conservative values has been emphasized. Later, this was replaced by more lines highlighting the glamour and excitement of flying.

Changes have been made attending throughout history, but one thing has stayed the same: safety is key. From the early 1920s onward, safety has been a chief concern of the cabin crew. Passengers know that they can rely on flight attendants to keep them happy and safe.
