The Basic Flight Attendant Requirements - In 2010, there were around 90,500 flight attendants. Most of them worked in commercial airlines. A flight attendant is usually on duty for 12 to 14 hours. One may, however, require more time on international flights. When new to the occupation, one works on reserve status, which means that you remain on call and you can be called upon to work any time. As you advance in your career, you’ll get more regular schedules. If you have decided to venture into this career, here are some of the flight attendant requirements:
1. Educational Requirements
1. Educational Requirements
The minimum educational requirement is a high school diploma. However, candidates with college degrees are preferred by many employers. Newly hired stewards will be trained for 3 to 8 weeks. You will then need to pass a proficiency test after which you will get certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. Certification only applies to the specific type of aircraft that you will be trained in.
2. Minimum Age
You must be at least 18 years of age. This, however, may differ according to different airlines. It however never goes beyond 21 years. The reason that one must be at least 18 years of age is that you will serve alcohol. One also needs to be mature as ensuring the passengers are safe is crucial. Being a cabin attendant can be a high-pressure role. The job is not restricted to young people. Older people, even in middle age can apply, for as long as you meet the flight attendant requirements.
3. Physical Attributes
a) Height and Reach
An air hostess must be able to reach overhead bins. This makes the height you can reach a more preferable measure when compared to your height. Cathay Pacific requires a reach of 208 cm. There are airlines that will allow you to stand on the balls of your feet. The most common height range is between 150 cm and 190 cm, or 4ft 11in and 6ft 3 in.
You must have a vision of at least 20/30, and it must be correctable to 20/40 or better.
Your weight needs to be proportional to your height. There are no specific numbers regarding weight for cabin attendants.
You must be well-groomed, meaning that your appearance must be unassuming so as not to offend anyone. This is one of the most basic flight attendant requirements. Major airlines have strict grooming regulations that must be adhered to. This is important to maintain the brand image of the airline. Some common requirements may be having a shirt that is always tucked in, always having polished shoes and never wearing hair colours and styles that may be termed outrageous.
5. Personal Characteristics
Some soft skills will be required since formal training only prepares you for the job. You will need to communicate effectively in English and have some personality traits like being a good team player, flexibility, patience, conscientiousness, optimism, punctuality, confidence, and paying attention to detail.
